Accounting for the Total Change in Employment

The foregoing descriptions of trends in participation and unemployment rates do not explain how much of the total change in gross employment rates during the crisis can be attributed to different groups. Prime-age females increased their participation, while that of other groups declined. However, prime-age females also endured larger increases in unemployment in some countries. The young saw a decline in participation and an increase in unemployment. Did one trend compensate for the other? What about the movements by prime-age males? Because of their predominance in labor markets, do they define the evolution of those markets?

The gross employment rate can be decomposed as a weighted average of the employment rates of youth, prime-age males and females, and senior workers, where the weights correspond to the population shares of these four groups. Formally:
